The Loire Valley is where the French court spent the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and it left behind the greatest concentration of Renaissance architecture in Europe. The stretch between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes is UNESCO listed as a cultural landscape, which is unusual: it is not the individual buildings that are protected so much as the whole river valley, its villages, its vineyards and the way the chateaux sit in it.

The practical problem is distance. Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise, Blois, Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau are spread across roughly a hundred kilometres of country roads, and the trains that serve the valley connect the towns rather than the chateaux. A private car turns a logistical exercise into a straightforward day: two chateaux and a lunch is comfortable from Paris, three if you start early and keep moving. Many guests prefer to do it over two days with a night in Amboise or Tours, which is a considerably more civilised way to see it.

Where We Pick You Up

Any address in Paris or the Paris region, and all three airports.

Your Paris hotel or apartment

Collected at the door at the hour you choose. For a Loire day trip we normally suggest leaving by half past seven, and we confirm the plan with you the evening before.

CDG, Orly or Beauvais

Orly is the closest of the three to the Loire. We track the flight and can take you straight from arrivals to a hotel in Amboise or Tours if you would rather begin outside Paris.

Anywhere in Ile-de-France

Versailles, Disneyland Paris or a suburban address. Starting south of Paris saves a useful amount of time on this route.

Distance and Travel Time

The Loire Valley is a hundred-kilometre stretch of river, not a single point, so a fixed distance from Paris would be meaningless twice over. Chambord is closer than Villandry; Blois is closer than Tours. And the pickup point matters as always, since a guest leaving Orly and a guest leaving Charles de Gaulle are not making the same journey.

The calculator above prices a real route. Enter your pickup address and the chateau or town you want first, and it asks the routing service for the actual road distance and driving time before showing you a price. As a general guide, central Paris to Chambord or Blois outside peak hours is around two hours, and Amboise or Tours a little more.

A day in the valley involves considerably more driving than the outbound leg, because moving between chateaux is the whole exercise. For that, send us the list you have in mind and we will quote it as a private day hire covering the driving between stops and the waiting time.

What There Is to See

Chambord is the largest and the strangest: four hundred and forty rooms, a roofline like a small town, and a double-helix staircase that Leonardo da Vinci may have had a hand in. Francois I built it as a hunting lodge and stayed in it for a few weeks in total.

Chenonceau is the one built across the river, its gallery standing on arches over the Cher. It was run by a succession of women, Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici among them, which is why it is known as the chateau des dames.

Amboise holds the royal chateau above the town and, a few hundred metres away, the Clos Luce, where Leonardo spent his last three years and where he is buried. Blois has four wings in four different centuries around a single courtyard, which makes it the best architectural lesson in the valley. Villandry is visited for its Renaissance gardens rather than its rooms, and Azay-le-Rideau for the way it sits in its moat. The valley is also serious wine country: Vouvray, Chinon, Bourgueil and Sancerre are all here.

A suggested day, entirely indicative

A suggestion only. Two chateaux is a comfortable day and three is a push; your chauffeur follows whichever you choose.

07:30 — Pickup in Paris

An early start is what makes two or three chateaux possible. Your chauffeur collects you at the hotel and heads south.

09:45 — Chambord

The largest of the chateaux and the one that benefits most from arriving before the coaches. Around two hours including the roof terraces.

13:00 — Lunch, then Chenonceau

Lunch in Blois or Amboise, then Chenonceau in the afternoon, roughly forty-five minutes away.

Late afternoon — Amboise or home

The Clos Luce if there is time and appetite, then back to Paris in the evening, or on to a hotel in the valley if you are staying.

Travelling with Family

Child seats on request

Tell us the ages when you book and the right seat or booster travels with the car at no extra charge.

Luggage stays with you

If you are moving on to a hotel in Amboise or Tours the bags never leave the car, which is the main advantage over doing the valley by train.

Two is usually enough

Children reach chateau saturation faster than adults do. Two properly, with a long lunch and time in the gardens, beats three at a run.

Common Questions

How many chateaux can we see in one day from Paris?

Two comfortably, three if you start early and keep the visits brisk. Four is not realistic and we would rather tell you that than sell you a day you will not enjoy.

Which two should we choose?

Chambord and Chenonceau is the classic pairing and the one most first-time visitors want. Blois and Chambord works well if you prefer architecture to gardens; Amboise and Chenonceau if you want Leonardo.

How far is the Loire Valley from Paris?

Around two hours to Chambord or Blois from central Paris outside peak hours, a little more to Amboise or Tours. Use the calculator above with your own address for a routed figure.

Is it better done over two days?

For most people, yes. A night in Amboise or Tours removes four hours of driving from the middle of the trip and lets you see the valley in the evening light, which is when it is at its best.

Do you book the chateau tickets?

No. We are a transfer company rather than a tour operator, so tickets are booked by you directly. Most of the major chateaux sell timed slots online, which we recommend in high season.

Can we add a wine tasting?

Yes, and Vouvray and Chinon are both easy to fit in. Book the producer directly and we will build the timings around it. Nobody in the car needs to stay sober.

How is a full day priced?

As a private day hire covering the outbound and return legs, the driving between chateaux and the waiting time. Send us your list and we will quote it properly.

Is the price fixed in advance?

Yes. You have the figure in writing before the day, tolls included, and it does not change afterwards.
