Amboise is the Loire Valley in miniature. A royal chateau on a limestone spur above the river, a manor house at the top of the hill where Leonardo da Vinci lived until his death in 1519, a working market town of tufa stone and slate roofs beneath both, and the Loire itself running wide and shallow past the sandbanks. It is small enough to see properly in a day and important enough to be worth the drive.

Getting there without a car means the train to Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, a change at Tours and a walk at the far end, and it leaves you stranded if you also want Chenonceau or Chambord, both of which are close. A private transfer removes all of that. Your chauffeur collects you at your door, drives you to the chateau gates, waits while you visit and takes you wherever you want next.

Where We Pick You Up

Any address in Paris or the Paris region, and all three airports.

Your Paris hotel or address

Lobby or doorstep pickup at the hour you choose. Amboise is a genuine day trip, so an early start gives you time for a second chateau on the same run.

CDG, Orly or Beauvais

Orly is the most convenient of the three for the Loire, but we collect from all of them, track the flight and meet you in arrivals with a name sign.

A station, Versailles or Disneyland

We collect from any mainline station and from Versailles or Disneyland Paris, and we can drop you at Tours or Blois station instead of returning to Paris.

Distance and Travel Time

We do not publish a single fixed distance for Paris to Amboise, because there is no honest one. A pickup at Charles de Gaulle, a pickup in the 7th arrondissement and a pickup at Orly produce three different routes, and quoting one number for all three would be misleading.

The calculator above measures the real road route between your pickup address and Amboise using live mapping data, then shows the driving distance in kilometres, an estimated driving time and the price in each vehicle. The figure comes from the road, not from a straight line on a map.

As a rough indication only, the drive from central Paris usually runs between two and two and a half hours on the A10, and the return on a Sunday evening can be slower than the outward leg. Please take your own figure from the calculator rather than this paragraph.

What There Is to See

The Chateau Royal d'Amboise sits directly above the town on its rock. What survives is roughly a fifth of what once stood there, but it is still substantial: the Gothic and Renaissance royal lodgings, the ramparts with their long view over the Loire, and the extraordinary Tour des Minimes, a tower with a spiral ramp wide enough for horses to climb it. In the grounds, the small chapel of Saint-Hubert holds what are believed to be the remains of Leonardo da Vinci.

Five minutes up the hill is the Chateau du Clos Luce, the red brick manor where Francis I installed Leonardo in 1516 and where he died three years later. The house is furnished as it was, and the grounds are laid out with full-size working models built from his drawings: the flying machine, the tank, the swing bridge, the screw. It is the rare attraction that genuinely holds children as well as adults.

The town below is worth an hour on foot. The Sunday market on the riverbank is one of the best in the Loire, the tufa cliffs behind the main street are honeycombed with old troglodyte dwellings and wine cellars, and the Touraine vineyards begin immediately outside town. There are pagoda gardens at Chanteloup a short drive south, and the Loire cycle path runs along the levee if you would rather walk than drive between stops.

Amboise pairs naturally with Chenonceau, which is fifteen minutes away, and with Chambord and Blois, both under an hour. Two chateaux in a day is comfortable, three is possible if you start early and do not linger over lunch.

A suggested day, entirely indicative

A suggestion only. Your chauffeur follows your plan, not ours, and every timing here can be moved.

Around 8:00 — departure from Paris

An early collection from your hotel or address. The Loire is a real drive, and leaving before the morning traffic thickens makes the whole day easier.

Around 10:30 — the Chateau Royal

An hour and a half for the royal lodgings, the ramparts, the Tour des Minimes and the chapel of Saint-Hubert with Leonardo's tomb.

Around 12:30 — lunch in the town

Lunch on the riverbank or in the streets below the chateau, with time to walk the market or the tufa cliffs afterwards.

Around 14:00 — the Clos Luce

Two hours for Leonardo's house and the park of working models. The gardens alone take an hour if the weather is kind.

Late afternoon — Chenonceau, or home

Chenonceau is fifteen minutes away and stays open late in summer. Otherwise your chauffeur starts the drive back whenever you are ready.

Travelling with Family

Child seats at no charge

Tell us the ages when you book and we fit the right seats and boosters before collecting you. They are never charged as an extra.

Stops on the way

Two hours each way is a long stretch for young children. Your chauffeur pulls in for a break whenever you ask, at no cost to the fare.

The Clos Luce suits children

Leonardo's working machines in the park are the most child-friendly thing in the Loire. Pushchairs and day bags travel in the vehicle and stay locked in it.

Common Questions

How much does a private transfer from Paris to Amboise cost?

The fare is the real road distance multiplied by 2.00 EUR per kilometre in the Executive Eco or 3.20 EUR per kilometre in the Premium Van, subject to a minimum of 90 EUR and 110 EUR respectively. Enter your pickup address in the calculator above for the exact figure.

How long does the drive from Paris take?

Usually between two and two and a half hours from central Paris on the A10, depending on your exact pickup address and the traffic leaving the city. The calculator gives you an estimated time for your own route.

Can we visit Amboise and Chenonceau on the same day?

Yes, and it is the most common pairing. Chenonceau is about fifteen minutes from Amboise. Chambord and Blois are also possible on the same day if you leave Paris early. Mention the full itinerary when you book so the day can be priced properly.

Will the chauffeur wait while we visit?

Yes, when the trip is booked as a return or a day trip. He stays with the vehicle nearby and you contact him when you are ready to move on. Tell us roughly how long you plan to stay at each stop.

Is Leonardo da Vinci really buried in Amboise?

He is believed to be. Leonardo died at the Clos Luce in 1519 and remains identified as his were reinterred in the chapel of Saint-Hubert, inside the grounds of the Chateau Royal, in the nineteenth century. The chapel is included with the chateau ticket.

Do you sell chateau tickets?

No. The Chateau Royal and the Clos Luce are ticketed separately on site or online, and there is a combined ticket for both. Booking ahead is worth doing in July and August.

Can you collect us from CDG and drive straight to Amboise?

Yes. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, meets you in arrivals with a name sign and there is no charge for reasonable waiting time after landing. Many guests do this on arrival rather than spending a first night in Paris.

How do we pay?

A 30% deposit secures the booking, paid by secure link once we have confirmed your journey in writing. The balance is paid to your chauffeur at the end of the journey, by card or in cash. See our cancellation policy. Ask when you book if you need an invoice for a company or an expense claim.
