Deauville was invented rather than grown. In the 1860s the Duc de Morny, half-brother to Napoleon III, looked at a stretch of marsh on the Normandy coast and decided that Paris needed a resort at the end of the new railway line. Within a few years there were villas, a racecourse and a casino, and the town has spent a century and a half being the place Parisians go to be seen. Coco Chanel opened her first boutique here in 1913, which is where the fashion for the seaside jersey came from.

What survives is a strange and rather wonderful confection: half-timbered villas in a style that never existed anywhere before Deauville invented it, the Planches boardwalk with beach cabins named after the actors who came to the film festival, two racecourses, a polo ground and a marina. Trouville, its older and more workaday neighbour, is across a footbridge and has the fish market and the more honest beach. Doing both in an afternoon is easy and is what we would suggest.

Where We Pick You Up

Any address in Paris or the Paris region, and all three airports.

Your Paris hotel or apartment

Your chauffeur meets you at the entrance at the agreed time. If your address is inside a pedestrian zone we settle a nearby meeting point in advance.

CDG, Orly or Beauvais

We track the flight and adjust to the real landing time, then meet you in arrivals with a name sign. Deauville works well as the first stop of a Normandy stay.

Anywhere in Ile-de-France

Versailles, the western suburbs, Disneyland Paris. We collect from where you are staying rather than requiring you to come into the centre.

Distance and Travel Time

We do not publish one fixed distance from Paris to Deauville, because the pickup point genuinely changes it. Deauville is west on the Normandy coast, so a guest starting at Orly, a guest starting at Charles de Gaulle and a guest starting in the Marais are all making different journeys. A single number would be inaccurate for most of them.

The calculator above asks the routing service for the real road route between your own address and Deauville, then shows the distance in kilometres and the driving time before any price appears. As a general guide, guests leaving central Paris outside peak hours are usually in the car for around two hours, by the A13.

Weekend traffic on the A13 in summer is the honest caveat, particularly on Friday evenings out of Paris and Sunday evenings back into it. If your dates fall on those days, an earlier start makes a real difference.

Les Planches boardwalk and beach cabins at Deauville

What There Is to See

Les Planches is the reason most people come: a wooden boardwalk running the length of the beach, backed by white and coloured bathing cabins each bearing the name of an actor who attended the American Film Festival. Walking it end to end takes twenty minutes and is the single most Deauville thing you can do.

The beach itself is wide, flat and sandy, with the row of parasols that appears in every photograph of the town. Behind it are the villas, the Casino and the grand hotels, the Normandy and the Royal, in the invented half-timbered style that spread from here across the whole coast.

Racing is serious business in Deauville, with two courses and a summer season that draws the Paris crowd, plus polo and the yearling sales. Trouville, across the bridge, is the older resort and the more genuine town: a working fish market on the quay, a long beach of its own and considerably better value at lunchtime. Villers-sur-Mer and Houlgate, a few minutes further along the coast, are quieter again.

A suggested day, entirely indicative

A suggestion only. Your chauffeur follows your plan and the day can change as you go.

08:30 — Pickup in Paris

Your chauffeur collects you at your hotel and takes the A13 towards the coast.

10:30 — Deauville

Dropped near the seafront. Les Planches, the beach and the villas, then coffee somewhere with a view of the sand.

13:00 — Trouville and lunch

Across the footbridge for the fish market and lunch on the quay, which is where most of the good eating is.

Afternoon — Honfleur, then home

Honfleur is twenty minutes away and pairs perfectly. Otherwise the racecourse, the casino or simply the beach until the light goes.

Common Questions

How long is the drive from Paris to Deauville?

Around two hours from central Paris outside peak hours, longer on summer weekends. Enter your real pickup address in the calculator above for the routed distance and time for your own journey.

Deauville or Trouville?

Deauville for the boardwalk, the villas and the racing; Trouville for the fish market, the working port and better value food. They are five minutes apart on foot, so the sensible answer is both.

Is it worth going out of season?

Many guests prefer it. The beach and the boardwalk are at their best empty, the light in autumn is exceptional, and the restaurants are considerably easier. The casino and the grand hotels stay open all year.

Can the chauffeur wait while we spend the day?

Yes. For a beach day we quote a private day hire including waiting time rather than two separate transfers, which is almost always what fits.

Can we combine Deauville with Honfleur?

Very easily; they are twenty minutes apart and it is the most common pairing on this coast. Etretat and the D-Day beaches are also within reach for a longer day.

Can you collect us from the airport?

Yes, from CDG, Orly or Beauvais. We track the flight, meet you in arrivals with a name sign and your luggage stays in the car.

Is the price fixed before we travel?

Yes. The figure quoted for your route and vehicle is what you pay, with no meter and no traffic surcharge.

Do you serve the American Film Festival or race meetings?

Yes, and we would ask you to book well in advance for those dates. Traffic and parking in the town during major events are difficult, so we build extra time into the schedule.
