Reims is where thirty-three French kings were crowned, in a cathedral that is one of the great achievements of Gothic architecture and one of the most heavily wounded buildings of the First World War. It is also the capital of Champagne, with Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger, Ruinart, Pommery and Mumm all headquartered within a few streets of each other, most of them above chalk cellars dug by the Romans and later extended for the wine.

The pairing is what makes it such a satisfying day out of Paris: a morning of cathedral and history, an afternoon underground with a glass in your hand. It is also the trip where having a chauffeur is not a luxury but the entire point. Champagne tasting and driving do not go together, and the region's most interesting producers are on small roads between villages rather than at the end of a train line.

Where We Pick You Up

Any address in Paris or the Paris region, and all three airports.

Your Paris hotel or apartment

Your chauffeur meets you at the door at the hour you choose. For an early start we agree everything the day before so that nothing needs discussing at seven in the morning.

CDG, Orly or Beauvais

Charles de Gaulle is on the right side of Paris for Champagne, which makes Reims a realistic first stop straight from the aircraft. We track the flight and adjust to the real landing time.

Disneyland Paris and the eastern suburbs

If you are staying east of the city you are already part of the way there. We collect from Marne-la-Vallee, Versailles or any other address without routing you through central Paris.

Distance and Travel Time

There is no single distance from Paris to Reims that would be honest to publish. Reims lies east-north-east of the city. A guest starting at Charles de Gaulle is meaningfully closer than a guest starting at Orly, and a hotel in the sixteenth arrondissement is a different journey from one at Gare de l'Est. Printing one figure would be wrong for most people who read it.

The calculator above measures your actual route. It asks the routing service for the real road distance between your own pickup point and Reims and shows the kilometres and the driving time before any price appears. As a rough guide only, guests leaving central Paris outside peak hours are generally in the car for around an hour and a half, usually by the A4.

If your day includes tastings in the villages of the Montagne de Reims or down towards Epernay, the total distance driven will be higher than the simple Paris to Reims figure. Tell us the shape of the day and we will price it as a day hire rather than as a transfer.

What There Is to See

Notre-Dame de Reims is the centrepiece. The west front carries the Smiling Angel that became the symbol of the city's survival, the nave is startlingly tall, and the east end holds three windows by Marc Chagall installed in 1974. The building was shelled and burned in 1914 and its restoration, funded substantially by the Rockefeller family, took decades.

The Palais du Tau next door held the coronation banquets and now displays the cathedral's treasury and original statuary. A short walk away, the Basilique Saint-Remi is older, calmer and to many visitors more moving than the cathedral itself. The Musee de la Reddition is the schoolroom where Germany signed its surrender in May 1945, preserved exactly as it was left.

Then the champagne houses. Most of the large maisons offer guided cellar tours ending in a tasting, and several of them descend into Roman chalk pits that are listed by UNESCO. Smaller growers in the surrounding villages give a very different and often more personal experience. Booking directly with the house in advance is essential in season.

A suggested day, entirely indicative

A suggestion only, and easy to change. Your chauffeur follows your plan and your appetite for the day.

08:00 — Pickup in Paris

An early start pays off on this route. Your chauffeur collects you at your hotel and takes the A4 east.

09:45 — Cathedral and old town

Dropped in the centre. Cathedral, Palais du Tau and a walk through the streets around it, roughly two hours.

13:00 — Lunch, then a cellar

Lunch in Reims, then your booked visit at one of the maisons. Tours generally run around ninety minutes including the tasting.

Afternoon — Vineyards, then home

A drive through the Montagne de Reims villages, or a second tasting with a small grower, before returning to Paris in the evening.

Common Questions

How long does it take to drive from Paris to Reims?

Around an hour and a half from central Paris outside peak hours, and somewhat less from Charles de Gaulle. Put your exact pickup address into the calculator above and it will return the routed distance and driving time for your journey rather than an average.

Do you book the champagne house visits for us?

No. We are a transfer company, not a tour operator, so tastings are booked by you directly with the maison or the grower. We will get you there on time, and we are happy to share what we know about which houses take walk-ins.

Can we visit several producers in one day?

Yes, and that is one of the best uses of a private car. Two visits plus lunch is a comfortable day; three is possible if they are close together. Send us the addresses and we will confirm the timings honestly.

Should we go to Reims or Epernay?

Reims has the cathedral and the biggest houses. Epernay has the Avenue de Champagne, where the great cellars run beneath one street. Many guests do both in a single day with a car, which is difficult by train.

Can the chauffeur wait between visits?

Yes. For a Champagne day we normally quote a private day hire including waiting time rather than two one-way transfers, because that is what actually fits the day.

Can we buy champagne and take it back with us?

Of course. There is room in the boot, and the van has considerably more of it. Do check the customs allowance for your destination country before you buy in quantity.

Is the price fixed before we set off?

Yes. The figure you are quoted is the figure you pay. There is no meter and no surcharge for traffic or waiting beyond what was agreed.

Can you continue on to Strasbourg or Colmar from Reims?

Yes. Reims sits naturally on the way east and we run long distance private transfers across France. Use the calculator for the full route or message us for a multi-stop quote.
