For roughly two hundred years, from the eleventh century onwards, the Counts of Champagne ran a circuit of six great fairs and Provins hosted two of them. Merchants came from Flanders, Italy and the Levant to trade cloth, spices and money, and the town built itself accordingly: ramparts, a castle keep, merchant houses with vaulted cellars, and kilometres of galleries cut into the rock underneath. Then the trade routes moved, the fairs died, and Provins simply stopped. That is why it is still there.
UNESCO listed the town in 2001 as an exceptionally complete example of a medieval fair town. What that means on the ground is that you walk through a real gate in a real wall into an upper town of about a thousand people, with a keep you can climb, a church that was never finished, and cellars underneath half the buildings. It is not a reconstruction and it is not a theme park, although the town has a healthy sideline in knights and falconry which is very good indeed and which children take extremely seriously.
Provins is also the home of the Provins rose, brought back from the crusades by Thibaud IV of Champagne, and the town still sells rose petal jam, honey and sweets made from it. If you have already done Fontainebleau and Vaux-le-Vicomte and want something in the Ile-de-France that is not a chateau, this is the answer.
Your chauffeur meets you where you are, at the time you choose. There is no queue, no shared shuttle and no waiting for other passengers.
Door to door from anywhere in Paris or the Ile-de-France. Your chauffeur waits at the entrance, helps with the luggage and leaves when you are ready.
Your chauffeur tracks the flight and adjusts to delays at no extra cost. Meet and greet in the arrivals hall with a name board, or kerbside if you prefer.
Provins is about forty minutes from the Disneyland hotels, which makes it an easy change of scene in the middle of a theme park week.
Provins is about 90 km southeast of central Paris and takes a little over an hour and a quarter by road. The route runs out past Disneyland Paris and then through open Brie countryside, which is a pleasant drive in itself.
The exact distance depends on your Paris address, so the calculator above works on the real road distance between your two addresses rather than a rounded number. Tolls, fuel and parking are already inside the price.
There is a direct train from Gare de l'Est that takes about an hour and a half, and for a single traveller it is perfectly good. The car makes the difference when the medieval shows are on: they run to their own timetable, they finish in the late afternoon, and the walk from Provins station up to the walled upper town is a steep twenty minutes that nobody enjoys twice.
The upper town is small enough to walk end to end. The shows are what turn a good half day into a full one.
The twelfth-century keep, octagonal on a square base, with a climb to the roof and the best view over the ramparts and the plain beyond.
Over a kilometre of wall still standing, with the Porte Saint-Jean and the Porte de Jouy. You can walk long stretches of it without paying anything.
Guided descents into the tunnels cut under the town by medieval merchants, cool in summer and covered in graffiti several centuries old.
An equestrian show with jousting, and a birds of prey display on the ramparts. Both run from spring to autumn and both are genuinely well done.
The Medievales, the town's big costumed festival, falls in June and fills the streets completely. It is worth planning a trip around, but the roads into the upper town close for it, so tell us when you book and your chauffeur will arrange a drop-off and a pick-up point outside the barriers.
Of everything within ninety minutes of Paris, Provins is the one that most reliably works for children of eight and up.
Baby seats, toddler seats and booster cushions, fitted before you get in. Tell us the ages when you book and they will be in the car.
The jousting and the birds of prey run at fixed times. Tell us which ones you have tickets for and we will set the departure so you are not running.
The Premium Van takes eight passengers with luggage, so an extended family travels together instead of splitting across two vehicles.
One fixed rate per kilometre of real road distance. No airport surcharge, no night rate, no charge for luggage or child seats.
A little over an hour and a quarter for roughly 90 km, southeast of Paris past Disneyland and out into the Brie. Allow longer if you leave central Paris in the morning rush.
If you want the shows, yes. The keep, the ramparts and the underground galleries fill a morning; the jousting and the birds of prey take up an afternoon. Without the shows, half a day is honest.
Easily. They are about forty minutes apart and a great many families do exactly this, using Provins as a day off in the middle of a theme park stay. We collect you from your Disneyland hotel and bring you back.
On a day hire, yes. Your chauffeur parks below the walls and is there when you come down. On a one-way transfer the journey ends at drop-off, so if you are returning the same day, ask for the day hire when you book.
In June the upper town closes to traffic for the festival. We can still take you, but the drop-off is outside the barriers and there is a short walk. Tell us the date when you book so the chauffeur plans it properly.
Yes. The calculator on this page works out the real road distance between your two addresses and applies the per-kilometre rate. You see the figure before you confirm and it does not change afterwards.
Partly. The upper town is cobbled and sloping and the keep involves stairs, but we can drop you at the top rather than at the bottom, which removes the worst of the climb. Tell us what you need when you book.
Yes. All our chauffeurs speak English. Booking, confirmation and any question along the way are all handled in English, which is the main reason most of our passengers choose us over a local taxi.
