Chartres is the closest thing France has to a complete thirteenth-century cathedral. It survived the Revolution, the two world wars and every fashion for improvement in between, which means its stained glass is largely original, its sculpture is intact and its floor still carries the famous labyrinth. The building rises above a small town of steep lanes and stone bridges on the Eure, visible from the wheat plains long before you reach it.
It is one of the easiest day trips from Paris, which is exactly why a private car makes sense. A transfer takes you from your hotel door to the cathedral square without a station, a ticket queue or a walk at the other end, and it gives you the freedom to add Maintenon, Rambouillet or Versailles on the way back if the afternoon is still young. Your chauffeur waits while you visit and drives you home whenever you are ready.
Any address in Paris or the Paris region, and all three airports.
Lobby or doorstep pickup at the hour you choose. A mid-morning departure is enough for Chartres, which makes it one of the gentler days out from the city.
Orly is the closest airport to Chartres, but we collect from all three, tracking the flight and meeting you in arrivals with a name sign.
Versailles is almost on the way, so combining the two in one day is straightforward. We also collect from Disneyland Paris and any mainline station.
We do not print a fixed distance for Paris to Chartres, because there is no honest single figure. Collection at Orly, collection in Montmartre and collection at Charles de Gaulle produce three quite different routes, and on a journey of this length the difference matters proportionally more than it would on a long haul.
The calculator above measures the real road route between your pickup address and Chartres using live mapping data, then shows the driving distance in kilometres, an estimated driving time and the price for each vehicle. The figure comes from the road, not from a straight line.
As a rough indication only, the drive from central Paris is usually a little over an hour on the A10 and the N10. Getting out of the city at rush hour is the main variable, and the return on a Sunday evening can be slower than the outward leg, so please take your own number from the calculator.

The cathedral is the reason to come and it rewards a slow, unhurried visit. Its two spires are deliberately mismatched, one plain Romanesque and one flamboyant Gothic built three centuries later, and the sculpture around the three great doorways is among the finest of the Middle Ages. Inside, around a hundred and seventy windows survive from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, including the deep blue that has been known for centuries as Chartres blue.
Set into the floor of the nave is a labyrinth eleven metres across, laid in the early 1200s and still walked by pilgrims. Chairs cover it for much of the week, but it is usually cleared on Fridays between spring and autumn, which is worth checking if walking it matters to you.
Below the town, the old quarter drops towards the river Eure in a series of stepped lanes, washhouses and small stone bridges. It is quiet, genuinely pretty and takes about an hour to wander. The Musee des Beaux-Arts occupies the former bishop's palace beside the cathedral, and the Centre International du Vitrail explains how the glass was actually made.
From April to October the town runs Chartres en Lumieres, an evening projection festival that illuminates the cathedral, the bridges and around twenty other buildings after dark. It is free, it is genuinely impressive, and it is a good reason to book a later return with your chauffeur rather than heading back in the afternoon.
A suggestion only. Your chauffeur follows your plan, not ours, and every timing here can be moved.
Collection from your hotel or address once the morning traffic has thinned. Chartres does not require a dawn start.
An hour and a half to two hours for the windows, the doorways, the crypt and, if it is uncovered, the labyrinth. The tower climb is extra if you have the legs for it.
Lunch on one of the squares near the cathedral, then the walk down through the lanes to the river and the washhouses.
The chateau of Maintenon and its aqueduct are twenty minutes away, and Versailles is broadly on the route back if you want a second stop before returning to Paris.
Tell us the ages when you book and we fit the right seats and boosters before collecting you. They are never charged as an extra.
Just over an hour each way makes Chartres one of the least demanding day trips from Paris with young children, and we still stop whenever you ask.
Pushchairs, picnic bags and coats all fit in the Premium Van, and everything stays locked in the vehicle while you are inside the cathedral.
Fares are calculated on the real road distance, never a straight line, and on shorter journeys the minimum fare of 90 EUR or 110 EUR applies. Tolls, fuel and an English-speaking chauffeur are included in every price.
The fare is the real road distance multiplied by 2.00 EUR per kilometre in the Executive Eco or 3.20 EUR per kilometre in the Premium Van, subject to a minimum of 90 EUR and 110 EUR respectively. Enter your pickup address in the calculator above for the exact figure.
Yes, when the trip is booked as a return or a day trip. He stays with the vehicle nearby and you contact him when you are ready. Tell us roughly how long you plan to stay so the day can be quoted properly.
Yes, and it is a popular pairing because the two sit broadly on the same axis west of Paris. Versailles in the morning and Chartres in the afternoon works well, or the reverse. Mention it when you book so we can price the whole route.
If you are visiting between April and October, yes. The projections start at nightfall and the cathedral is remarkable under them. Simply book a later return time and your chauffeur will be there when the show finishes.
Entry to the cathedral itself is free. The tower climb and the crypt tour are ticketed on site, and we do not sell them. Guided tours in English run regularly and can be booked in advance through the cathedral.
Yes. Orly is the closest airport and this is a straightforward run. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, meets you with a name sign and there is no charge for reasonable waiting time after landing.
Around six hours door to door covers a comfortable cathedral visit, lunch and a walk in the old town. Add two hours if you want a second stop such as Maintenon or Rambouillet.
A 30% deposit secures the booking, paid by secure link once we have confirmed your journey in writing. The balance is paid to your chauffeur at the end of the journey, by card or in cash. See our cancellation policy. Ask when you book if you need an invoice for a company or an expense claim.
